IndiGo names aviation veteran Willie Walsh as Chief Executive Officer, set to take charge in August following his tenure at IATA.
IndiGo has appointed Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), weeks after the exit of Pieter Elbers. Walsh is expected to assume the role in early August after completing his term at the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Willie Walsh has served as Director General of IATA since April 2021, becoming the eighth individual to hold the position. He began his aviation career in 1979 as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus and went on to become its Chief Executive Officer in 2001.
In 2005, he joined British Airways as CEO, where he managed operations during the global financial crisis and strengthened international partnerships. He later played a key role in the merger of British Airways and Iberia, leading to the formation of International Airlines Group, where he served as CEO until 2020.
At IATA, Walsh has been involved in guiding the aviation industry’s recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic and advancing the sector’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. He holds a degree from Trinity College Dublin.
