More than 50 diversity-minded groups among 214 cut by tech giant as it shifts priorities towards AI and reacts to policy shifts
Google has disaffiliated 214 groups from a list of funding recipients, including 58 diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) groups, based on an investigation by the Tech Transparency Project (TTP).
The review was conducted against Google’s refreshed list of recipients of its U.S. Government Affairs and Public Policy unit. Among the entities dropped, those affiliated with DEI—marked by their focus on race, inclusion, or advocacy—formed the biggest category. Google explained that the list only captures donations received in 2024 and not its entire funding portfolio.
The decision comes amidst other cost-cutting measures and the growing investment by Google in artificial intelligence (AI). It also comes after new federal guidelines were introduced that restrict the scope of DEI efforts.
While the changes were made, Google said that it is still committed to backing a diverse range of organizations that advance innovation-oriented policies despite political differences.
