Introduction
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) held its 50th annual convention of Company Secretaries at Hotel ITC Royal Bengal, Kolkata from September 1 to September 3, 2022. The theme for the Convention was ‘CS: A Vishwaguru in Governance & Sustainability to explore the responsibilities of Company Secretaries (CS) at the time of evolving elements of the regulatory environment and to encourage stronger standards of corporate governance.
Over 1,100 professionals attended the event physically in addition to over 5,000 attending the event virtually. The attendees coming from disparate industries and various different countries included corporate leaders and C-level executives, Company Secretaries, Board Members and Directors, Chartered Accountants, Cost Accountants, Senior Bureaucrats, and Government Officers, Academicians, among other professionals in Corporate Governance, Compliance, Secretarial, Financial, Legal, Management, and Academic disciplines.
The National Convention’s Special Guest was Mr. Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Bandhan Bank Limited who commented, “Without governance, no organization can work or grow and Company Secretaries are playing a key role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and integrity, the key fundamentals of good governance and sustainability in India Inc.” Mr. Devendra Deshpande, President of ICSI said that, “ICSI has undertaken a number of national and international initiatives and projects that are at various stages of implementation.”

Importance of the theme of ‘Governance and Sustainability‘
The theme of ‘Governance’ reflects compliance with the changing dynamics of the organizational framework for corporate governance initiatives in India. These mainly included regulations from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) among other industry-specific regulators. With ‘Sustainability’, a growing concern for governments as well as responsible boards around the world is to fight climate change and reduce emissions. As a rare achievement, all United Nations (UN) and the Member States in 2015 adopted 17 goals as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with a 15-year target to achieve these goals.
