The American Bar Association (ABA) has ended its policy of reserving five Board of Governors seats for women, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and individuals with disabilities. Under new rules approved by the ABA’s House of Delegates, those seats will now be open to any candidate demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), regardless of demographic background.
The change comes as the ABA, the nation’s largest voluntary lawyers’ organization, faces declining membership and political pressure – including challenges from conservative groups and former President Donald Trump over its DEI policies. Advocates say the shift could reduce legal risks while preserving diversity values.
